Bernie was watching this insect on Animal Planet last night, and couldn’t help but think it could be a team name for the Wissahickon Spring League. It’s the Mountain Rock Weta. “Make your poon poon weta, weta.” Besides the obvious Jamaican rap tie in, the Weta have developed special proteins in their haemolymph (the insect equivalent of blood) which prevent ice from forming in their cells. This enables them to survive at temperatures down to –10°C, even when 82% of their body water has frozen. So they can thaw out after being frozen in ice for four months. Sounds like a hockey player to me.
In case you didn’t think it was a great time, here’s the photographic evidence. Thanks Marcus.
